About us
manchu.ai is a research team developing AI tools, datasets, and digital research infrastructure for the study of Manchu language and historical sources. Our work brings together historical research, digital humanities, and artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on optical character recognition, document analysis, machine translation, and the computational study of Manchu-language materials.
The project is led by Dr. Yan Hon Michael Chung, Assistant Professor of Digital Humanities at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).

The project is supported by Schmidt Sciences' Humanities and AI Virtual Institute (HAVI) through Playing Heaven: Remapping Early Modern Neo-Confucian Worlds with AI, led by Dr. Javier Cha as Principal Investigator, with Dr. Michael Chung as a Co-Principal Investigator. Playing Heaven was selected as part of the inaugural cohort of Schmidt Sciences HAVI projects.
The development of manchu.ai has also been supported by the Digital Humanities Seed Funding at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
